“Rise of the Female Superhero”

I thought that this video “Rise of the Female Superhero” by Katie Couric deserved its own post all together. If you watch the 16 minute video, you will notice a lot of interesting facts about women in the comic book world. The dynamic of the fan base is changing, and this culture that once shunned females is now made up of 47% women and girls. All 12 of the writers, editors, and publishers in this video discuss the evolution of women in comic books, from damsels in distress to superhero. The people delve into how female writers are sparking a revolution in the way women are represented and how this is affecting and inspiring young girls to pursue their passions and to see themselves as the hero.

Fantastic video! There’s so much information there. It really explains everything your topic is based on. It’s amazing how when there are so many people interested in reading about/seeing female superheroes there are still those awful people that are absurdly against equal representation in comics. I found it especially fascinating when the description was being given of the comic book store and how it was blatantly obvious that it was a boy’s club and women were not welcome.

Seeing just how bad things had become in the comic book industry shocked me. Some of those covers looked more appropriate for an adult store instead of a comic book store. The women who managed to break up this guy’s club must have went through a lot and continue to do so.

Interesting! I liked it a lot and it seems that this is a very mini women’s movement (I am relating back to the 1960’s) in a certain way. But I always think that there will be machismo in comic books.
